   The Burlington Railroad rostered in its stable an entire fleet of stainless steel paneled E-5 class diesel-electric locomotives.  These were used on all of the railroad's fleet of streamlined passenger trains.
   Here the  California Zephyr  leans into a  super-elevated curve near Naperville, Illinois.
   Southern Railway's northbound Crescent  crosses the 7- mile long trestle near Slidell, Louisiana in the 1970's.

This trestle spans the southeast quadrant of Lake Pontchartrain.
    A Southern  Railway train crosses over the trestle which spans the Potomac River and Tidal Basin near downtown Washington D.C.

   This steam locomotive is now a part of the permanent display at the Smithsonian Museum.
" Biloxi Bay Crossing "
   Louisville & Nashville's Hummingbird drifts across the back bay near Biloxi, Mississippi in the1960's. 
 The rays of the early morning sun highlight the train's consist.
   The Silver Meteor races west along US Highway 90 during the sixties.  A viscious thunderstorm is pounding Jacksonville, Florida in the  distance.                                   
   A Norfolk Southern roadrailer approaches Atlanta, Georgia in the mid 1990's.  This train is one of the highest priority
 trains on the Norfolk Southern System and is allowed to run at passenger train speeds.




" Glamour Girls "
   This is a typical line up of trains during the early morning in Jacksonville, Florida during the 1950's.  At one time this terminal was the busiest train station south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
   Classic train, automobile, and hotel in downtown Chicago during the late fifties.

" Amtrak"s  Empire Service "
   Amtrak P32AC-DM dieisel-electric locomotives line up beneath Penn Station in New York City. 
These high tech locomotives operate between New York and Washington, D.C. on high speed passenger service and are geared to operate at speeds in excess of 110 mph. They also operate off both third-rail and deisel electric power.

   Double- headed " Challenger" class steam locomotives pass double-headed "Big Boys" near Peterson, Utah in the spring of 1942.  These two sets of steam locomotives were the largest steam locomotives ever built.

   Pennsylvania Railroad's passenger train The General  curves arount the world famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania in the 1950's.  A  steam-powered K-4 Class locomotive adds a sense of drama to this scene as both trains head west towards Gallitzen, Pennsylvania.

   The Central of Georgia Railroad's Flamingo races the Southern Railway's Pelican as both trains head east out of Birmingham, Alabama in the late 1950's.  The Sloss Furnace in the middle foreground was at one time the largest open hearth blast furnace in the southeastern United States.

An elderly gentleman waves at the Crescent as it roars south towards Atlanta, Georgia in the early 70's. 
The location is near Duluth, Georgia. Spring is in the air, but the Crescent is in the autumn of its life as America's last privately owned passenger train. It was taken over by AMTRAK in 1972.
